Rajsamand

Rajsamand District is a district of the state of Rajasthan in western India.The town of Rajsamand is the district headquarters. The city and district are named for Rajsamand Lake, an artificial lake created in the 17th century by Rana Raj Singh of Mewar. The district had been constituted on 10 April 1991 from Udaipur district.Carved out from erstwhile Udaipur district,  Rajsamand  district  was  constituted on 10th April, 1991, and named after the famous lake "Rajsamand" built by Maharana Raj Singh. Rajsamand is situated 67 Km north of Udaipur and 352 KM south of state capital – Jaipur on N H W – 8. Rajsamand is located between latitudes 24o 46'  to 26o 01'  N and Longitudes 73o 28'  to 74o 18'  E. Rajsamand district is surrounded by Ajmer in North, Pali in West, Udaipur in South and  Bhilwara in East.

Administratively Rajsamand is divided in to 7 Sub-divisions, 7 Tehsils and 7 blocks.  There are 205 Gram Panchayats and 236 Patwar Circles.Total population of the Rajsamand district (as per census 2001)  is 9,87,024 of which 4,93,459 male and 4,93,565 female. This district has a male to female ratio of 1000:1000.The district has an area of 4,768 km². The Aravalli Range forms the northwestern boundary of the district, across which lies Pali District. Ajmer District lies to the north, Bhilwara District to the northeast and east, Chittorgarh District to the southeast, and Udaipur District to the south. The district lies in the watershed of the Banas River and its tributaries. Some other rivers are: Ari, Gomati, Chandra and Bhoga.​

Rajsamand is very well known for its marble production as the largest producing district as well as the largest single unit  in  the  whole country. Rajsamand  also  saw  the  vicissitudes of  the  freedom  struggle between TANTYA TOPE and the British troops at 'Rakamgarh ka chhapar' in 1857. Nearest Railway Station : Kankroli

History

Rajsamand is a town of Rajasthan state of India.It is Named on Rajsamand Lake (also known as:Rajsamudra Lake) which is situated near Rajsamand town in Indian state of Rajasthan . Built in the 17th Century, it is approximately 1.75 miles wide, 4 miles long, and 60 feet deep. The lake was built across the Gomati, Kelwa, and Tali Rivers, with a catchment area of approximately 508 square kilometers.Rajsamand (Rajsamudra) Lake, a huge expanse of water 66 km. north of Udaipur, between the towns of RAJNAGAR and KANKROLI. The lake was the result of a dam constructed across the Gomati, Kelwa, and Tali rivers at the southwestern end by Maharana RAJ SINGH I, between 1662 and 1676 AD. The reason for the dam and lake was to provide employment for victims of a widespread drought and famine (1661), and to provide canal irrigation to local farmers. The digging of its foundations began on January 1, 1662. Ranchod Rai, the elder son of Purohit Garibdas, the Royal Priest, laid the foundation stone on April 17, 1665. Construction of the actual dam began on January 14, 1676, Maharana Raj Singh observing a fast on the previous day. The following day, after having his bath, he went to the temple with his brothers, sons, queens, and other relatives. He then observed Ratri-Jagran (the singing of devotional songs) all night.

Geography

The district has an area of 4,768 km². The Aravalli Range forms the northwestern boundary of the district, across which lies Pali District. Ajmer District lies to the north, Bhilwara District to the northeast and east, Chittorgarh District to the southeast, and Udaipur District to the south. The district lies in the watershed of the Banas River and its tributaries. Some other rivers are: Ari, Gomati, Chandra and Bhoga.
